Overview
What is the Associated Students Program Board?

The Associated Students Program Board (ASPB) brings entertainment and special events to UC Riverside. The board is comprised of 15 full-time undergraduate students who work primarily, though not exclusively, in the following six divisions: Concerts, Special Events, Films & Lectures, Contemporary Culture, Marketing, and Leadership. Throughout the academic year, the student-run board hosts concerts, special events, films, and lectures for 25,000+ undergraduate students.

My Role

As marketing director, I was tasked with creating graphics, posters, and promotional materials for events that our board of directors programmed for social media platforms and physical distribution. In addition, I also had to consistently utilize social media platforms like Instagram (25K+ followers) and Facebook to promote on-campus entertainment events. During events, I would capture, edit, and strategically share photos and videos to social media from events ranging from 300 to 20,000 students. Our programming board was run by the students for the students.

Marketing Responsibilites

For each event, I was responsible for the following marketing efforts:

  • Event aesthetics
  • Main Poster
  • Social Media Posts
  • Promo Item Design and Inquiries
  • Day-of-event Instagram Story Posts
  • Day-of-event Photography and Videography

All events have these marketing efforts. However, depending on the scale of the event, more responsibilities would be added.

The Process / Timeline

Since our events were held throughout the academic school year, our board would plan their events a quarter ahead. This was intentional so that here would be less stress during the year and so we can effectively order all promotional items ahead of time before the event. Each programming division would have an assigned marketer- which was either myself or my three other marketing co-directors. Programmers would give their marketers a Pinterest board of their desired aesthetic and inspiration for their event. Marketers, ultimately had freedom to do what they wanted with their given Pinterest board.

Below are a few of the events that I designed and marketed for, feel free to click on any poster for more information about the event and my design process!

My Takeaways

I am so proud that our programming board was able to put on such large scale events for our fellow undergraduate students as we transitioned to in-person classes since the pandemic ended. We had gained 2,000+ followers on Instagram since the previous year as well as reaching full capacity for many of our events since the pandemic. I'm glad to have created events for our students to take a break from their studies and share fun experiences with their peers.

This role has taught me so much about patience, teamwork, and growing as an individual in the design community. I am thankful for the supportive team that I was able to work alongside with- we were truly a board that was run by students, for the students. I value how this role pushed me and my design capabilities. I was able to fluidly create and curate designs that fit the visions of my programmers and myself.
